Nintendo Switch 2 Jailbroken Using AI and Old Game

2 Min Read

A modder named Sammy Hajhamid, also known as pepsipu, has reportedly jailbroken the unreleased or newly surfaced Nintendo Switch 2. According to a report by The Verge, the custom “ns2jb” jailbreak allowed the console to run a modified version of Mario Kart World. This custom game featured unauthorized playable characters, specifically Cinnamoroll, the red Angry Bird, Peter Griffin from Family Guy, and Steve from Minecraft. Hajhamid stated that OpenAI’s Codex tool was utilized to help create the jailbreak.

The Role of AI in Hardware Modding

The use of coding assistants like OpenAI’s Codex in hardware exploits highlights how generative AI tools are increasingly applied to traditional software engineering tasks, including reverse engineering and security research. While jailbreaking consoles is a long-standing practice in the gaming community, leveraging AI to streamline the creation of exploits represents a shift in methodology, potentially lowering the technical barriers required to find vulnerabilities in modern consumer electronics.

Unknowns and Future Developments

The initial reports did not specify the exact mechanics of how the old game interacted with the Switch 2 system architecture to enable the exploit, nor did they detail the specific vulnerabilities in the console’s firmware that Codex helped uncover. Furthermore, Nintendo has not yet commented on the reported jailbreak, and it remains unknown whether the company will issue firmware patches or legal responses regarding the modified software.

Observers are waiting to see if further technical documentation or proof-of-concept code will be released publicly by the modder.
