Ride-hailing platform inDrive has announced plans to test autonomous vehicles in Central Asia, partnering with autonomous driving firm Pony.ai and chipmaker Nvidia. According to a report by TechCrunch, the companies intend to launch these robotaxi trials in the capital of Kazakhstan during the first half of 2027.
The Autonomous Vehicle Landscape in Central Asia
Autonomous vehicle testing has largely been concentrated in North America, China, and parts of Europe. Bringing driverless technology development to Central Asia represents an expansion into a new geographic market for both Pony.ai and Nvidia hardware. Regional deployments require adapting autonomous systems to local road layouts, traffic patterns, and weather conditions, making early trials a necessary precursor to any commercial rollout.
What Remains Unclear
While the 2027 testing window has been established, the announcement did not specify the exact scale of the pilot fleet, the specific vehicle models that will be used, or which Nvidia hardware platform will power the autonomous systems. Furthermore, regulatory approvals required to test driverless vehicles on public roads in Kazakhstan have not yet been detailed.
Observers will be watching to see how the partnership progresses toward the 2027 target date.
