Cloudflare Launches Python Support for Serverless Workers

1 Min Read

Cloudflare has officially made its Python support for Workers generally available following a two-year preview period. As reported by Simon Willison, Python is now designated as a first-class language on the platform, allowing developers to execute Python code directly within server-side environments.

Under the Hood: WebAssembly and V8

The technical implementation relies on compiling Python to WebAssembly utilizing Pyodide, which then operates inside Cloudflare’s V8-based workerd runtime. However, this architecture introduces specific operational constraints. The documentation notes that multiprocessing and threading capabilities do not function within the WebAssembly virtual machine environment.

Open Questions and Limitations

While the general availability rollout marks a stable milestone for the feature, the initial announcement did not specify a complete roadmap for addressing the current WebAssembly-related concurrency limitations. Developers planning to migrate heavy multithreaded workloads will need to watch for future updates regarding thread and multiprocessing support in the runtime.

The integration expands language accessibility for serverless developers, though architectural adjustments may be required for certain Python applications.
