Alibaba Releases Qwen Audio 3.1 and Cuts AI Audio Prices Up to 95%

2 Min Read

Alibaba‘s AI team, Qwen, has released Qwen-Audio-3.1, a lineup of five models designed for automated speech recognition (ASR), text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis, and real-time interaction. Alongside the software launch, the company has reduced its AI audio pricing by up to 95 percent, as reported by The Decoder. The updated standard ASR model improves recognition across multiple languages and regional dialects while automatically filtering out filler words and repetitive phrases. An upgraded version, designated ASR-Next, introduces multi-speaker identification with time-stamped outputs, alongside capabilities for detecting speaker emotions, ambient background sounds, and machine noise. The release also features TTS models built for multilingual voice synthesis.

Shifting Costs and Multimodal Capabilities

The drastic price reduction highlights aggressive competition among major cloud providers seeking to make developer API access more economical. By incorporating feature extractions—such as background noise identification and multi-speaker separation—directly into the base models, the Qwen suite eliminates the need for developers to chain together multiple distinct audio processing services. These consolidated capabilities target common enterprise audio tasks, including customer support automation, media transcription, and real-time voice interface applications.

Unanswered Questions and Deployment Details

Despite the initial details provided about feature updates, several key operational parameters remain unconfirmed. The announcement did not specify the exact baseline pricing tier across each of the five individual models, nor did it detail performance latency metrics for real-time interaction. Additionally, while the release notes cite enhanced dialect and multilingual capabilities, the comprehensive list of supported regional languages was not disclosed. It also remains unclear whether all five models will be available for open weights or restricted to API endpoints.

As developer adoption of real-time audio systems accelerates, Alibaba’s pricing strategy places pressure on competing AI infrastructure providers. Further technical documentation is expected to clarify full language support and API usage limits.
