OpenAI Research Now Primarily Focused on GPT-7 and Beyond

2 Min Read

OpenAI is looking significantly further ahead than its current public-facing technology suggests. Boris Power, the company’s Head of Applied Research, recently revealed that the vast majority of the organization’s research efforts—specifically between 80 and 90 percent—are directed toward future models such as GPT-7, GPT-8, and subsequent iterations. According to reporting from The Decoder, Power characterized improvements made within any single generation as short-term strategic bets, rather than the primary focus of the company’s long-term scientific goals.

The Shift Toward Long-Term Scaling

This disclosure highlights a strategic emphasis on massive scaling and the pursuit of advanced artificial intelligence. By dedicating nearly all research resources to models several generations ahead, OpenAI is signaling that the current limitations of existing systems are viewed as temporary hurdles. Interestingly, Power suggested that increasing raw model performance may not be the most pressing issue facing the industry today. Instead, he identified a gap between the capabilities of current AI and the public’s ability to utilize them. In his view, many users do not yet fully understand how to apply the tools already available to them, suggesting that user adoption is a significant bottleneck.

Unknown Timelines and Technical Specifications

The announcement did not specify any projected release dates for GPT-7 or GPT-8. It remains unclear how OpenAI distinguishes the technical boundaries between these future generations or what specific architectural breakthroughs are being pursued to reach those designations. Furthermore, the reporting did not provide details regarding the computational costs or the specific hardware infrastructure required to support research at this scale. It also remains to be seen how the company will manage the immediate safety and reliability concerns of its current products while the bulk of its staff focuses on the distant future.

As OpenAI pivots its internal resources toward these future milestones, the industry will likely watch to see if this long-term focus helps bridge the gap between technical potential and practical user application.
