Anthropic Launches Claude Sonnet 5.5 With Speed and Cost Gains

2 Min Read

Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in its Claude 5.5 family. According to a report by The Decoder, the new model generates output more than 30 percent faster and costs up to 30 percent less per task compared to previous iterations. On knowledge-work benchmarks, Claude Sonnet 5.5 nearly matches the performance of the larger Opus 5.5 model. The biggest shift appears in coding benchmarks, where the model’s score on Terminal-Bench jumps dramatically from 10.3 to 70.6 percent.

Expanding the Claude 5.5 Lineup

The release of Sonnet 5.5 fills out the middle tier of Anthropic’s current generation of models. With a smaller Haiku 5.5 model announced for release in the coming weeks, Anthropic will soon field a direct counterpart to each of OpenAI’s three GPT-6 models. This rollout strategy mirrors standard industry practices of offering scaled models tailored for different balances of speed, capability, and cost.

Open Questions and Future Releases

While the initial performance numbers and pricing details are public, several aspects of the deployment remain unspecified. The announcement did not provide exact pricing metrics beyond the general percentage reduction, nor did it share the specific architectural changes driving the performance leap on Terminal-Bench. Furthermore, an exact release date for the upcoming Haiku 5.5 model was not given, leaving the timeline for the completion of the Claude 5.5 family somewhat open.

Observers will be watching to see how the forthcoming Haiku model performs against its competitors once it launches in the coming weeks.
