Dr. OPD Aims to Improve On-Policy Distillation in LLMs

2 Min Read

A recent preprint indexed by arXiv cs.AI outlines a new method called Dr. OPD, or OPD Done Right, designed to improve how large language models undergo on-policy distillation. In standard on-policy distillation, a student model trains on its own generated responses while receiving token-level supervision from a stronger teacher model. Traditional approaches typically treat every teacher signal with equal weight, assuming all tokens hold the same importance. Dr. OPD modifies this by introducing an optimal weighted approach aimed at maximizing student performance based on the varying impact of different token signals.

Understanding Teacher Supervision in Distillation

In machine learning research, distilling knowledge from a large teacher model to a smaller student model is a common technique for reducing computational costs while retaining capability. On-policy methods are particularly useful because the student learns from its own rollout distribution rather than a fixed dataset. However, distinguishing between critical corrective feedback and negligible signals during token-level supervision remains a central challenge in optimizing these training pipelines.

Unknowns and Future Implementation Details

The announcement did not specify the exact architectural specifications of the student and teacher models used in the evaluation, nor did it provide benchmark performance scores compared to vanilla OPD. Furthermore, the publication is currently a pre-print, and the announcement did not specify whether the code or training frameworks will be made publicly available for independent verification.

Researchers and engineers working on model compression will need to monitor future updates for empirical results and implementation guidelines regarding Dr. OPD.
