Anthropic Releases sandbox-runtime for AI Agent Security

2 Min Read

Anthropic has released sandbox-runtime, an open-source security tool designed to restrict file and network access for artificial intelligence agents, Model Context Protocol servers, and command line interface tools. According to a report by MarkTechPost, the software operates at the operating system level rather than using traditional containers, utilizing Apple’s Seatbelt on macOS and bubblewrap on Linux. This is the same underlying sandboxing technology used behind Claude Code.

Operating System-Level Isolation

As autonomous AI agents and developer tools gain broader access to local systems, securing execution environments has become a critical engineering focus. Traditional containerization methods can introduce overhead or configuration complexity, whereas OS-level sandboxing restricts actions directly through system primitives already built into modern operating systems. By open-sourcing sandbox-runtime, developers working with autonomous coding assistants gain a standardized way to limit what files an agent can read or modify and which network endpoints it can contact.

Unknowns and Future Considerations

The announcement did not specify performance benchmarks comparing sandbox-runtime to existing container solutions, nor did it detail plans for Windows operating system support. Additionally, it remains unclear how configuration parameters will scale across different enterprise deployment environments.

Developers interested in testing the open-source utility can review the repository directly on GitHub to examine its integration with macOS and Linux primitives.
