London-based startup Basecamp Research has secured $140 million in funding from investors that include Nvidia and Anthropic’s Anthology Fund. According to reporting by The Decoder, the company gathers genetic material from diverse natural environments like rainforests, oceans, and hot springs, using this biological data to train artificial intelligence models designed for creating antibiotics and cell therapy tools.
The Biological Frontier for AI
In an interview with The Decoder, Basecamp Research CTO Phil Lorenz discussed the technical challenges of applying artificial intelligence to biological systems. Lorenz noted that biology presents a significantly greater problem for AI models than language processing. Furthermore, he highlighted a key limitation in current evaluation methods, explaining that high performance scores on paper do not necessarily guarantee the creation of effective physical molecules.
What Remains Unclear
Despite the funding announcement and details regarding the company’s data collection methods, several specifics remain undisclosed. The public announcement did not specify a timeline for the commercial release of the antibiotics and cell therapy tools. Additionally, exact details regarding the composition of the training datasets, the specific architectures of the AI models, and financial breakdowns of the funding round were not provided.
As investors like Nvidia and Anthropic back biological AI initiatives, the industry will watch to see how startups translate natural genetic data into functional real-world therapeutics.
