A new open-source command line tool named RemoveMacAI allows users to delete approximately 12GB of Apple Intelligence data from their macOS systems. According to a report by The Verge, the utility addresses a storage issue for users who want to reclaim disk space occupied by Apple‘s built-in artificial intelligence models.
Storage Management and macOS Changes
Previously, macOS included a single Settings toggle designed to disable Apple Intelligence entirely. However, that specific toggle was removed in macOS 27, resulting in the AI models remaining on the local disk even when the features are not in active use. This left users with fewer native options to completely purge the large data files from their storage drives.
Unknowns and Open Questions
The announcement did not specify whether deleting these files via RemoveMacAI might cause system instability or interfere with future macOS updates that rely on the underlying framework. It remains unclear if Apple will officially reintroduce a native toggle to remove the local AI assets in upcoming software patches, or how the operating system responds when these core model files are forcefully deleted.
Users considering this command line tool should weigh the need for freed storage space against potential risks to their system’s software integrity.
