Where-OPD Brings Self-Distillation to Multimodal Models

1 Min Read

Researchers have introduced Where-OPD, a new method applying on-policy self-distillation to multimodal large language models. The technique uses a frozen or exponential moving average version of a model to supervise itself using privileged information. arXiv cs.CL reported the development.

Expanding Self-Distillation

Self-distillation has previously proven effective for boosting language-model reasoning tasks. While prior efforts in the multimodal space relied on privileged visual data like specific image crops to enhance perception, those methods were largely restricted to tasks requiring visual zooming. Furthermore, past techniques often demanded human-annotated grounding data or external teacher models.

Open Questions

The announcement did not specify the exact performance metrics achieved across different benchmarks, nor did it detail the computational overhead required to train models using Where-OPD. It remains unknown how the framework scales when applied to larger model architectures or entirely uncurated visual datasets. Further testing will be needed to determine its broader utility.

The research paper provides the initial framework for Where-OPD, though practical deployment timelines were not shared.
