QuanReview Launches for Auditing Human and LLM Span Annotations

2 Min Read

Researchers have released QuanReview, an open-source tool designed to audit and correct structured span annotations made by humans and large language models. arXiv cs.CL reported the development of the system, which works by aligning two annotation streams at the character level across the same documents. QuanReview handles unambiguous cases through an explicit and logged policy while routing remaining conflicts to a browser-based adjudication interface. In this interface, human reviewers can accept either side, create field-level hybrids, or flag items for re-annotation.

Addressing Reliability in Hybrid Annotation

Structured span annotations, such as quantities paired with units, uncertainty modifiers, and event classes, demand high precision. Creating these datasets manually is costly, but introducing large language models into the workflow introduces trust and verification challenges. Systems like QuanReview attempt to bridge this gap by providing an offline, auditable reconciliation layer that keeps human oversight at the center of data quality control without relying on proprietary cloud infrastructure.

Unknowns and Open Questions

Several details regarding the rollout and technical requirements of the tool were not disclosed in the initial release. The announcement did not specify performance benchmarks for handling large document volumes, hardware requirements for running the system offline, or the specific programming languages used to build the adjudication interface. It remains unclear how the tool scales across different domains or whether integration support for specific commercial large language models will be provided in future updates.

Developers and researchers working with hybrid annotation pipelines can access the open-source release to evaluate its suitability for their current workflows.
